Last week I was fortunate enough to spend the week in Destin, Florida with my family where we had next to no cell phone data and even worse, no wifi. It was incredible...ly scary, kinda.
As a wedding photographer, I am my only employee. If I'm sick or get hurt or go out or town there is no one to watch over my day to day work- like responding to emails, sending quotes and invoices, and of course editing. All of which can be done anywhere with an internet connection so I wasn't worried about spending the week in Florida. It's 2016; who worries about not having wifi!? Well apparently I should have. Im not sure if Destin is just a black hole of wireless technology or if it was a combination of both AT&T being the worst carrier and our resort having a 3rd grader set up their Wi-Fi, but I had only a small window of usable internet between 4-6am. The first day I was worried, maybe my phone has to restart? The second day I started to panic, what if a bride emails me with a critical question and I can't respond and she hates me and tells everyone she knows I'm the worst human ever!? I even chose a restaurant to eat dinner at that I thought would have wifi so I could get a little work done. On the third day... I stopped fighting, and I gave up. I put my phone away. No Snapchat. No Instagram. No Facebook. No Emails... and you know what? It was incredible! It's so easy to get lost in this magical device called your iPhone and it can be an extremely powerful and productive tool but taking a week off away from everything was really refreshing. I might have to schedule a few of these per year!
