Finding a wedding photographer seems like more of a daunting task than hiring most other vendors. The Photographer is the only vendor who will be giving you something that will last longer than the wedding day itself. And with so many choices its easy to becomes overwhelmed with who to pick. This guide is to help make the process just a bit easier and ensure you're going to be happy with your photos!
1. Where do you start?
If you are reading this article you have clearly already started to look for a photographer and I'm sure you have noticed that there is no shortage of photographers out there. Its important not to get overwhelmed by them all. Just find 5 or 6 photographers in your price range then move on to step 2.
2. Pick a photographer who you would want to be friends with.
You have a short list of photographers now stalk them on FB and Instagram like they are your best friends ex. You're looking for 2 main things here. You want to make sure they are still alive and are posting new photos regularly. Some photographers websites haven't been updated in years. FB forces us to stay current! And thats great for you! This is a great chance to get a better feel for the kind of person they are, the things they like, and the jokes they think are funny. If you think they are funny too, you both will probably get along great!
3. Meet with them!
I love meeting with couple's. Its a rush! I always want to know how you two meet, What you two do for fun, and how excited you both are for the wedding. All of these things help me tell a better story of the wedding day so they are important! If your photographer is all business and has no personality, however you need to ask yourself if you want to be with this person for the majority of your wedding day! The meeting should be light and fun. Hey maybe you will even leave knowing thats exactly who you want to shoot your wedding!
4. Time for Engagement Photos!
This is such a great way for you to better know your photographer and for them to get to know you both better as well. Your engagement photos are a great low stress way to get some amazing photos and spend some time together on an adventure outside! You can also key your photographer in on how the wedding planning is going too. Remember, photographers have been to a lot of weddings and typically have a network of vendors they know and trust. So if you have any questions or concerns about, finding a florist who will be able to meet your request, or a baker who specializes in gluten free options, THIS is the perfect opportunity to ask if they have any recommendations!
5. Getting ready for the wedding!
After your engagement photos you can get a good idea of how the photographer works. How long it takes to get the photos, how your engagement photos are delivered, how they share your engagement photos on their FB or Instagram. This can better prepare you for the wedding too and just one of the MANY reasons why engagement photos are so important to getting the best Wedding photos. During this time keep your photographer at the front of your mind. They would always be more than happy to help if you have any questions about a timeline or if a vendor backed out last second. Use them like you would a friend! A friend who has been to hundreds of weddings!
